FirstPres @ South Hayward
“South Hayward Parish” was acquired by FirstPres in 2019,
in order to preserve essential services to our South Hayward community.
We’ve maintained the name “South Hayward Parish” through these years, to ensure communication continuity for those who depend on South Hayward Parish. Now, as we look to update this facility and our programs, we’re bringing our name into alignment with our whole organization. “South Hayward Parish” is now simply “FirstPres @ South Hayward.” Other changes will be coming, too. But, our commitment to serving this community continues.

History
South Hayward Parish operated as a food pantry serving South Hayward for more than 50 years. In 2019, the Presbytery of San Francisco was planning to sell the building, when the First Presbyterian Church of Hayward stepped in to ensure this vital community asset could continue, and even expand.
The growth of our services over these past 7 years has pushed the limits of this property and our financial resources, and required us to enter 2026 in discernment. We have worked and prayed to discern how to best steward our resources and live our mission to meet community needs, and it has become clear that operating both a food pantry and shelter on the same campus is no longer sustainable. We made the difficult decision to discontinue food pantry operations so we can focus fully on serving our unhoused neighbors. Our last day of food distribution was August 14, 2026. Learn more about the closure here.
Now, South Hayward Parish continues as the second site of the First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, with expanded services to include an emergency shelter and daily resource center for those experiencing homelessness. Busier and more essential than ever, FirstPres @ South Hayward is “home” for 25 of our unhoused neighbors every night, and is able to be a resource to the community through the dedicated work of staff and volunteers.
